Our Discovery Process explained…

Online platforms – we build them right for you with expert and refined processes.

At Surge Online we are committed to this mission and a collaborative working approach using Agile.

This is the first in a series of blogs to provide an insight behind the process we use at Surge Online to build our software solutions, with you and your end user in mind.

Our approach is to reduce your risk, maximise your investment, best utilise your time and build your solution in a more collaborative way when compared to the more traditional approaches.

Our guarantee is to deliver your Minimum Viable Product on time and within budget.

Our customers tell us that they want to work closely and create leading solutions, utilising our build and Quality Assurance processes, both of which ensure we can deliver robust software, time and time again.

During any project, change is inevitable, whether it be due to alterations in budgets, personnel, or customer needs. Our collaborative approach has one goal: the success of your product.

So, our discovery stage is led by a Behaviour Driven Development (BDD) consultant, who uses special software and a collaborative whiteboard to capture live notes during the meeting, creating full visibility for all involved and therefore a clarity of purpose. This will include:

  • Brainstorming the personae of the business
  • Enumerating the roles
  • Enumerating all of the tasks which each of the roles do
  • Identifying Key Goals
  • Identifying Key Pain and Gains

This is much more than just an information gathering exercise, as we strive to understand the relationship between your entities, processes and tasks, which our experienced team are experts in collating. From this process we are confident of building entity and process/event diagrams to demonstrate our understanding of how your business works, a summary of the requirements and how the proposed solution may all come together.

Our approach effectively merges Agile and BDD.

Our discovery stage has been developed over many years to help you establish your specific requirements without spending hours, or even months, in advance developing a specification.  We work with you to manage the Triple Constraint, considering the linkage of cost, time and scope click here to read more

As an Example – The Project Time needs to be reduced.  “Owing to unforeseen circumstances, a 2 month project now needs to be finished in 1 month”

There are 2 options available:

If you were a triangle, you’d be acute one

If you were a triangle, you’d be acute one

i) Shrink the triangle – make the project less ambitious, reducing the cost & scope in the process, or

ii) Skew the triangle – keep the scope the same, but owing to the reduced time, more resources will be required; i.e. more cost

So, in the Discovery Phase, we sit down and discuss the project with you and your stakeholders, in a structured way. We are always mindful of the Triple Constraint, checking back constantly with you to avoid making

So how do we achieve this promise at Surge Online?

  • Resources – we devote more Discovery time at the outset than other companies, because we know how important it is to ‘Build it Right for you’
  • Continuity – the people involved at the Discovery phase are present all the way through your project
